Chatsworth House in Derbyshire is the family seat of the Cavendish family and has been the magnificent home of the Dukes of Devonshire for centuries. There is a thriving weekly market held in Bakewell every Monday and on the same day the town plays host to an ancient cattle market until recently held in the market square but now housed in a specially constructed building near the river and where you can watch the farmers bidding for their livestock and take in some of the atmosphere of real country life. In nearby Pilsley you can find the farm shop for Chatsworth where all the produce on sale has been grown or raised on the estate. Try some of their home-reared lamb or pick up a jar of honey or pickles and get a real taste of the country. Adjoining the farm shop is a restaurant serving produce also from the estate, popular with locals and tourists alike.
