Luxury Holiday Cottages In Chesterfield
This historic town was granted a charter from King John in 1204 and a market has been held there ever since. Chesterfield, in the heart of the Peak District is home to one of the largest open air markets in Britain, the stalls sitting either side of the historic Market Hall. In the middle of town, a collection of narrow medieval streets make up ‘The Shambles’, which houses The Royal Oak, one of Britain's oldest pubs. The parish church of St Mary and All Saints is also known as The Crooked Spire; the spire is both twisted and leaning, twisting 45 degrees and leaning 9 feet 6 inches from its true centre. The peaceful Queen's park has been the focus of much of Chesterfield’s leisure since Victorian times. It provides a boating lake, gardens, children’s play area and is occasionally used for county cricket matches. George Stephenson, the inventor of Stephenson’s Rocket, lived in Chesterfield at Tapton House, which was a grammar school for many years and is situated in beautiful parkland. There are good rail links from Chesterfield to Sheffield and Manchester and the town is an excellent base from which to explore the Peak District. Although a bustling town you are never far from the countryside in Chesterfield and only need to glance up to see the fields and hills that surround the town. Luxury holiday cottages can be found in the leafy suburbs and nearby villages.
