Luxury Holiday Cottages In Clay Cross

Until the 19th century Clay Cross was a quiet farming village situated on an old Roman Road but the advent of the railway was to transform the town into a thriving industrial and mining centre. George Stephenson, whilst driving a tunnel under Clay Cross hill for his main line from Derby to Leeds, discovered a rich seam of coal and iron deposits. Clay Cross grew around these industries although it is still essentially a rural town set in the countryside and there are luxury holiday cottages within easy reach.  The mines have long since closed, to be replaced by engineering and iron works. The town, with its busy shops and Saturday market, has new social and educational centres, library, sports amenities, including a swimming pool and sports complex.
