Luxury Holiday Cottages In Ilam
Ilam village in the Peak District National Park lies next to the river Manifold, and has a spacious, attractive appearance, with its Swiss-chalet style housing. Ilam’s unusual layout is mainly due to the efforts of local industrialist Jesse Watts Russell, who rebuilt the village and hall in the 19th century. Ilam’s position makes it a great base to explore the Peak District and to stay in one of the luxury holiday cottages on offer in the area. Ilam Hall and country park now belong to the National Trust and the hall and grounds are used as a youth hostel, tearooms, shop and information centre. The church, which stands in the grounds of the hall, is of Norman origin, and has a distinctive saddle-back tower, but like the hall, much of the church was rebuilt in the 19th century although there is an ornate Saxon font, carved with scenes from the life of St Bertram. If it is outdoor pursuits you seek then you could attend the Dovedale Sheepdog Trials held in Ilam in August every year.
