Luxury Holiday Cottages In Winster
Winster, with its broad main street, is a most attractive village about five miles from Matlock and six miles from Bakewell surrounded by lovely Derbyshire Dales countryside and a great centre for Peak district walks if you choose to stay in one of the luxury holiday cottages in the area. There are some lovely old buildings in the village Main Street and more than 70 of them are listed buildings. The most spectacular of these is the striking Old Market Hall, which juts out into the Main Street. Now a tourist information centre it is a fine example of a 17th century market hall and was the first property to be acquired by the National Trust in the Peak District in 1906. Winster Parish Church is the Church of St John The Baptist, and a week-long annual carnival called Winster Wakes starts on the first Sunday on or after June 24 (the feast day of St John The Baptist). The Main Street is closed briefly on the Sunday for the Wakes Parade, and for much of the following Saturday afternoon, when there are stalls and entertainment (including Morris Dancing) in the street. On Shrove Tuesday of each year, the local pancake race takes place.
